Juseige comes from the Larger Sutra of Immeasurable Life. In that sutra the Bhiksu Dharmakara, who becomes Amida Buddha, declared his 48 Vows to the Buddha Lokesvararaja, expressing his intentions to become a Buddha himself and create a Pure Land where all suffering beings can be saved. After saying these Vows, Dharmakara recited a threefold sacred pledge known as Juseige:
A pledge to
1) establish the most incomparable Vows in the world, to
2) become a great provider and save the poor and suffering, and to
3) attain Buddhahood and have his Name heard throughout the universe.
